Pilates One-on-One Training
Personal Trainer and Pilates Instructor Marla Stephens tailors her training sessions to clients' individual needs, using a variety of techniques and equipment, including Pilates on the floor mat, reformer, and chair; TRX suspension training; foam roller stretching; and myofascial release.
Pilates helps develop core strength, and as a result, increases stability throughout the entire torso. This is one of the ways Pilates helps people overcome back pain. In her one-on-one sessions with clients, Marla often utilizes specialized equipment to enhance the effects of the technique, including the reformer or chair.
TRX Suspension Training
The TRX suspension trainer is a special set of straps and handles that allow for portable, body-weight based training that can help build strength, balance, flexibility, and core stability. Under Marla's guidance, clients can move quickly from one exercise to another, to achieve a combination of strength, flexibility and metabolic training.
A fitness professional for more than 10 years, Marla holds a B.A. in kinesiology from Sonoma State University and is an American Council on Exercise-certified personal trainer, a Level 1 Pilates Reformer Certified Instructor through Balanced Body and a certified massage therapist.
Marla worked for about 18 months at a pain clinic in Santa Rosa, teaching clients with back injuries and chronic pain how to manage their condition with appropriate movements, exercises and stretches. She continues to teach clients how to recognize when a flare-up is approaching and how to prevent or alleviate it.
Marla's own back issues inspired her to teach Pilates and offer massage. These two modalities helped her so much with her condition that she incorporated them into her personal training business.
